Early December held an adventure for us, and despite being a month late, I think that a quick roundup of our favourites from South Africa need to make a special and hence, first 2014 blog post. Happy New Year everyone! I wish all your dreams come true!

South Africa started off as a destination because we wanted to travel in December, but to the Southern Hemisphere, so as to avoid the winter elsewhere. The first 4 nights were spent in the luxorious Londolozi, spending our days as guests of the cheetah, leopards, lions, zebras, hippos and giraffes. This was followed by 5 nights in Cape Town and 2 nights in Franschhoek. While stuffing our faces in CT and wine country, my instagram tag for #EatingCapeTown became quite a common occurrence, and it is this that I focus on. We also made it to Gansbaai for cage diving with the great whites!

The Highlights:

  1. The Pot Luck Club (Ask for the Vegetarian Menu) or the Test Kitchen
  2. La Moutte (7 course Vegetarian Tasting Menu)
  3. Burrata
  4. Bombay Brasserie (3 Course Vegetarian Menu)
  5. Bean There
  6. El Burro
  7. Parring
  8. The Tasting Room (African Inspired Vegetarian Surprise Tasting Menu)
  9. Bread and Wine
A favorite was the Neighbourgoods Market which takes place at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock every Saturday morning. Go with lots of cash, hungry and thirsty, because you will want to drink/eat/buy everything!!

Franschhoek was stunning, with duvets of thick dense clouds pouring over the mountains like dry ice foaming up, made for dramatic and spectacular all day beauty. We stayed at the charming and fragrant Le Quartier Francais, and every minute in that hotel was paradise. A meal at the Tasting Room must be booked literally when you finalise your flight tickets. It really is worth it. And of course, so are the wine tasting, especially the Method Cap Classiques. A truly gastronomical and fantastic vacation.
